As a forest evolves, its "Weed Trees", Aspen, Birch, etc., will give way to others, largely hardwoods, such as Beech, Hickory, and Oak. Beavers clean up the old Aspens, such as this one, and eat the bark and the growing layer just beneath the bark. Most of the Aspen were removed from the land betwen Sixberry and Millsite during the nineties.
Once the Aspen and Birch are gone, Beaver will continue to girdle trees, with no intention of eating them. Over the long run, by removing the hardwoods they bring the area back to the meadow. Aspen and Birch will regrow, and the beavers will be happy. Many of us, who like the forest better than meadows, will not.
The hardware cloth was too late to protect this Oak, which eventually died and fell over.
